Richmond Castle

By the tumbling waters of the River Swale
Rise grey stone walls and castle keep
Where crumbling grey walls could tell many a tale
Of Knights in amour and maidens pale
And dungeons dank and deep
While from the battlements ghostly watchers keep
Silent vigil over the cobbled street
No more do tales of chivalry and knightly valour
Ring through silent solar or ladies bower
Crumbling grey walls are all that remain
Of a once proud lords knightly domain

MAN'S LIFE TIS BUT A FLEETING THING
BE HE PAUPER OR BE HE KING

TO MOLD AND SHAPE THE EARTHEN SOUL
TO SEEK PRECIOUS LOVE OR MAYBE GOLD

HE COMES IN LIKE THE MORNING MIST
TO TAKE THE LAND THAT DOTH RESIST

BE HE VIKING STRONG OR PREACHER MILD
TO REPRODUCE AND FATHER CHILD

THAT MIST IT GROWS STRONG THEN WITHERS AWAY
BUT --- CHILDREN SIRED MUST HAVE THEIR DAY

ALAS --- TOO SOON GONE NER TO RETURN
FOR MORTAL MISTS DOTH RAPID BURN

NOW BENEATH HOLLOWED GROUND THEIR ASHES LAY
GONE OUR MOTHERS AND FATHERS OF YESTER DAY

LEAST WE SHOULD THOUGHTLESSLY DISMISS
OUR NOTEWORTHY SIRES -- AMID TIMES MIST

I DO TO YOU THIS SMALL WORK PRESENT
OF ANCIENT FATHERS AND WHAT THEY MEANT
